It's Christmas time!

Band Aid was a British and Irish charity supergroup, founded in 1984 by Bob Geldof and Midge Ure in order to raise money for famine relief in Ethiopia by releasing the record "Do They Know It's Christmas?" for the Christmas market. The single surpassed the hopes of the producers to become the Christmas number one on that release. Two subsequent re-recordings of the song to raise further money for charity also topped the charts. The original was produced by Midge Ure. The 12" version was mixed by Trevor Horn.

BACKGROUND

The name 'Band Aid' was chosen as a pun on the name of a well known brand of adhesive bandage, also referring to musicians working as a band to provide aid and alluding to the fact that any help stemming from their efforts is likened to a band-aid on a very serious wound.

The group has reformed on three occasions, each time from the most successful British and Irish pop music performers of the time, to record the same song at the same time of year. Co-writer Midge Ure once commented: 'Every generation should have its own version'.

ORIGINAL BAND AID

Chronology (1984)

The original 1984 Feed The World logo was based on a pencil sketch by Bob Geldof after watching a BBC television news report by Michael Buerk from famine-stricken Ethiopia, was so moved by the plight of starving children that he decided to try and raise money using his contacts in pop music. The news report itself has become famous, being voted among the greatest television moments of the century, and it remains Buerk's definitive work, even though most of his career was spent as an anchorman.

Geldof enlisted the help of Midge Ure, from the group Ultravox, to help produce a charity record. Ure took Geldof's lyrics, and created the melody and backing track for the record. Geldof called many of the most popular British and Irish performers of the time (Kool & The Gang and Jody Watley were the only Americans present at the original recording), persuading them to give their time free. His one criterion for selection was how famous they were, in order to maximise sales of the record. He then kept an appointment to appear on a show on BBC Radio 1, with Richard Skinner, but instead of promoting the new Boomtown Rats material as planned, he announced the plan for Band Aid.

The recording studio gave Band Aid no more than 24 free hours to record and mix the record, on 25 November 1984. The recording took place between 11am and 7pm, and was filmed by director Nigel Dick to be released as the pop video though some basic tracks had been recorded the day before at Midge Ure's home studio. The first tracks to be recorded were the group / choir choruses which were filmed by the international press. The footage was rushed to newsrooms where it aired while the remainder of the recording process continued. Later drums by Phil Collins were recorded, including the memorable opening 'African Drum' beat. But in reality, the introduction of the song features a slowed down sample from a Tears for Fears' track called "The Hurting", released in 1983. Tony Hadley, of Spandau Ballet, was the first to record his vocal, while a section sung by Status Quo was deemed unusable, and replaced with section comprising Paul Weller, Sting, and Glenn Gregory. Paul Young has since admitted, in a documentary, that he knew his opening lines were written for David Bowie, who was not able to make the recording but made a contribution to the B-side (Bowie performed his lines at the Live Aid concert the following year). Boy George arrived last at 6pm, after Geldof woke him up by 'phone to have him flown over from New York on Concorde to record his solo part.

The following morning, Geldof appeared on the Radio 1 breakfast show with Mike Read, to promote the record further and promise that every penny would go to the cause. This led to a stand-off with the British Government, who refused to waive the VAT on the sales of the single. Geldof made the headlines by publicly standing up to Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and, sensing the strength of public feeling, the government backed down and donated the tax back to the charity.

The record was released on 3 December, and went straight to No. 1 in the UK singles chart, outselling all the other records in the chart put together. It became the fastest- selling single of all time in the UK, selling a million copies in the first week alone. It stayed at No. 1 for five weeks, selling over three million copies and becoming easily the biggest-selling single of all time in the UK. It has since been surpassed by Elton John's "Candle In The Wind 1997" (his tribute to Diana, Princess of Wales) but it is likely to keep selling in different versions for many years to come.

After Live Aid, "Do They Know It's Christmas?" was re-released in late 1985 in a set that included a special-edition 'picture disc' version, modeled after the Live Aid logo with 'Band' in place of 'Live'. An added bonus, "One Year On" (a statement from Geldof and Ure on the telephone) was available as a b-side. "One Year On" can also be found in transcript form in a booklet which was included in the DVD set of Live Aid, the first disc of which features the BBC news report, as well as the Band Aid video, with the following statement made shortly after the video's mixing scrolling upwards in the credits:

"Dear Bob and Midge,
It's 8:00am on the 28th November 1984 just 48 short hours after you'd finished mixing the record. The video is complete and ready for TV sets all over the world.

Over twenty people were responsible for making this video: they gave us their time and their expertise. For this we shall be eternally grateful.

Echo & the Bunnymen are an English post-punk group, formed in Liverpool in 1978. Their original lineup consisted of Ian McCulloch, guitarist Will Sergeant and bass player Les Pattinson, supplemented by a drum machine assumed by many to be “Echo”, though the band denies this. In the 1982 book Liverpool Explodes!, Will Sergeant explains in an interview:

“ We had this mate [Smelly Elly] who kept suggesting all these names like The Daz Men or Glisserol and the Fan Extractors. Echo and the Bunnymen was one of them. I thought it was just as stupid as the rest. ”

The band’s early cult status quickly turned into mainstream success in the mid-1980s, as they scored a UK Top 10 hit with “The Cutter”, and their Porcupine (1983) album reached #2 (see 1983 in music). The next album, Ocean Rain (1984), again spawned hit singles to match their critical acclaim, and the band’s success continued. The departure of frontman Ian McCulloch in 1988, followed by the death of their drummer Pete de Freitas the following year, culminated with a complete split in 1990.

In 1997, however, the Bunnymen returned with the UK Top 10 hit "Nothing Lasts Forever" (see 1997 in music), and both press and fans were delighted by their heroes' return. Since then, both their artistic and commercial successes have been in something of a decline, their original post-punk sound gradually being replaced by a more retro '60s sound. Echo and the Bunnymen continue to perform regularly.

Early years

Ian McCulloch began his career in the summer of 1977, as one third of the legendary Crucial Three, a bedroom band which also featured future Liverpool stars Julian Cope (later of The Teardrop Explodes) and nowadays a successful author/musician/occultist, and singer/guitarist Pete Wylie (later of Wah!). After the demise of this punk band, McCulloch and Cope formed the short-lived A Shallow Madness with drummer Dave Pickett and organist Paul Simpson, during which time such seminal Liverpool tunes as "Read It In Books","Robert Mitchum", "You Think It's Love" and "Spacehopper" were written by the pair (though Cope infuriated McCulloch by taking sole writing credit for "Spacehopper" on his 1987 Island Records album 'Saint Julian'). When Cope sacked McCulloch from the band for alleged lateness to rehearsals, A Shallow Madness changed their name to The Teardrop Explodes, and McCulloch joined forces with guitarist Will Sergeant to form Echo and the Bunnymen. In November 1978, Echo and the Bunnymen made their debut at Liverpool's famous Eric's club, playing as support to McCulloch's old cohorts, now performing as The Teardrop Explodes and with Julian Cope installed as lead singer.

Echo & the Bunnymen’s critically-acclaimed debut single “Pictures on My Wall”, was released on Bill Drummond's Zoo in May 1979, the B-side being the McCulloch/Cope collaboration “Read It in Books” (also recorded by The Teardrop Explodes approximately six months later as the B-side of their final Zoo Records single “Treason”). In two Echo and the Bunnymen biographies Never Stop (1987) and Turquoise Days (2002), McCulloch has denied that Cope had any involvement with the writing of this song. There is no evidence to support McCulloch's claims, however, as the singer has made his entire Bunnymen career from collaborative songwriting (and even his two solo albums "Candleland" (1989) and "Mysterio" (1992) contain only collaborative works). Julian Cope, on the other hand, has written hundreds of songs on his own, released across over 20 solo albums, and has always insisted that McCulloch's notion of songwriting is a false one, attempting to claim a full writing credit when the singer has merely sung his own melody over another's music. As it's now over twenty years after the event, this case will most likely never be proved one way or another, but the "Read It In Books" saga does provide a fascinating insight into the depth of the dysfunctional McCulloch/Cope relationship.

By the time of their debut album, 1980’s Crocodiles, the drum machine had been replaced by Trinidad-born Pete de Freitas, and a single, “Rescue”, climbed to UK #62 and following critical acclaim, the album broke into the Top 20 at #17.

Their next album, Heaven Up Here (1981), was an even bigger critical and commercial success, reaching the UK Top Ten (#10). However, a single lifted from the album, “A Promise”, could only reach UK #49.

Mainstream success

In June 1982, the Bunnymen achieved their first significant UK hit single with “The Back of Love” (#19). This was followed in early 1983 with their first Top 10, the more radio-friendly “The Cutter," which climbed to #8. The parent album, Porcupine, hit #2 in the album chart. Now firmly established as a chart act, further hits followed with a one-off single, “Never Stop” (#15) and “The Killing Moon”, a preview from the new album featuring a dramatic McCulloch vocal, which became the band’s second UK Top 10 single at #9.

Following an overblown but masterful PR campaign which proclaimed it “the greatest album ever made”, 1984’s Ocean Rain reached #4, and today is widely regarded as the band’s masterpiece. Single extracts “Silver” (UK #30) and “Seven Seas” (UK #16) consolidated the album’s continued commercial success. In the same year, McCulloch had a minor solo hit with his cover version of “September Song”.

Unfortunately for the band, Ocean Rain proved to be an impossible album to follow up, and they could only re-emerge in 1985 with a single, “Bring On the Dancing Horses” (UK #21), and a compilation album, Songs to Learn and Sing, which duly made #6 in the UK album chart. However, all was not well in the Bunnymen camp, and Pete de Freitas left the band. The next (self-titled) studio album was recorded with ex–Haircut 100 drummer Mark Fox, but when de Freitas returned in 1986, it was largely re-recorded. Eventually released in mid-1987, it was for many long-term fans an artistic disappointment, after the glory of "Ocean Rain". Nevertheless, the record sold well (UK #4), and was a small American hit, their only LP to have significant sales there.

In the United States, the band’s best-known songs were “The Killing Moon” (from Ocean Rain) and “Lips Like Sugar” (from Echo and the Bunnymen), although “Bring On the Dancing Horses” is well-known as one of the songs on the soundtrack to the John Hughes film Pretty in Pink.

1988 split

McCulloch quit the band in 1988, and de Freitas was killed tragically in a motorcycle accident in the summer of 1989. After former Colenso Parade singer Oscar turned down an offer to take over from McCulloch,[1] Pattinson and Sergeant recruited ex-St Vitus Dance vocalist Noel Burke and drummer Damon Reece. Keyboardist Jake Brockman (a touring member of the band for several years previously, and a contributor to the 1987 album) was promoted to full member, and the five-piece recorded Reverberation in 1990. This did not generate much excitement among fans or critics, and the group was abandoned shortly afterwards. McCulloch, meanwhile, had continued his solo career, with the albums Candleland in 1989 and Mysterio in 1992.

Re-formation

In 1994 McCulloch and Sergeant began working together again under the name Electrafixion; in 1997 Pattinson rejoined the duo, meaning the three surviving members of the original Bunnymen lineup were now working together again. Rather than continue as Electrafixion, the trio resurrected the Echo and the Bunnymen name and released the album Evergreen (1997), which reached the UK Top 10. Immediately prior to the release of the band’s next album, What Are You Going to Do with Your Life? (1999), Les Pattinson quit to take care of his mother. McCulloch and Sergeant have continued to tour and record as Echo and the Bunnymen, touring repeatedly and releasing the albums Flowers (2001) and Siberia (2005). The group’s current touring incarnation comprises McCulloch and Sergeant along with Stephen Brennan (bass), Gordy Goudie (guitar), Nicholas Kilroe (drums) and Ceri James (keyboards).

On September 11, 2006, Echo and the Bunnymen released an updated version of their 1985 Songs to Learn and Sing compilation. Now re-titled More Songs to Learn and Sing, this new compilation was issued in two versions, a 17-track single CD and a 20‑track version with a DVD featuring 8 videos from their career.

In March 2007, the Bunnymen announced that they had re-signed to their original record label, Warner, and were also working on a new album.[2] The band were also said to be planning a live DVD, entitled "Dancing Horses", which also contained interviews with the band. This was released in May 2007, on Snapper/SPV.[3] Unfortunately, due to a re-structuring of the record company, the reunion with Warner Brothers proved to be short-lived, and the band was dropped once again before any new material had been released.

The Bolshoi formed in 1984 in Bath. The original lineup consisted of singer/guitarist Trevor Tanner, drummer Jan Kalicki, and bassist Nick Chown; Tanner and Kalicki had previously played together in the short-lived punk band Moskow. Early gigs supported the likes of The Cult, The March Violets, and Lords of the New Church. In 1985, the band released their debut single, Sob Story, followed by the mini-album, Giants and their hit song "Sunday Morning". Word of mouth was such that the Bolshoi were able to sell out many of their early headlining performances. The band migrated to London in 1985, and their lineup expanded to include Paul Clark on keyboards. In 1986, they released their first full-length album, Friends, and expanded their touring schedule to U.S., South America, and Poland. It was followed in 1987 by the album Lindy's Party, on which the sound was more pop-oriented. Stylistically, The Bolshoi was difficult to categorize. It has been described as a proto-goth band, similar in their live act to fellow Beggars Banquet signees, Bauhaus. Tanner was recognized for his dark, pensive lyrics that belied a social responsibility and awareness. After the release of Lindy's Party, the band recorded a fourth album, but problems with their record label management impeded its release, and they disbanded as the 1980s drew to a close. The unreleased fourth album, apparently titled "Country Life", is reportedly still in the vaults at Beggars Banquet.

Soft Cell is a Synth-Pop duo formed during the early 1980s. It consists of Marc Almond (vocals) and David Ball (synthesizers). Lyrics by the duo often focused on love and romance as well as the darker side of life, with subjects such as kinky sex, transexualism, drugs and murder. The duo had a huge world-wide hit in 1981 with a cover version of "Tainted Love".

Soft Cell emerged from the New Romantic and New Wave era, but were part of the futurist scene, alongside the likes of Depeche Mode, OMD, The Human League and Gary Numan. The darker nature of their music also made Soft Cell popular in the emerging Goth scene.

Origins

Both Marc Almond and David Ball grew up in seaside towns (Southport and Blackpool respectively), and later met while students at the Leeds Polytechnic Fine Arts University (now Leeds Metropolitan University). Almond, a performance artist, collaborated with Ball on a few avant-garde multi-media performances at the university. Ball, a gifted multi-instrumentalist, decided to experiment widely with analogue synth sounds and technique, and this, coupled with Almond's performance art and kitchen sink lyrics, led the two to create Soft Cell.

Early Soft Cell

Their initial efforts at recording resulted in an EP called Mutant Moments, funded by Ball, made with a simple 2-track recorder. This was released independently with only 2000 vinyl copies pressed and has since become a highly valued collector's item among Soft Cell fans. Their early shows and EP caught the interest of certain record labels, such as Mute Records and Some Bizarre Records, both of which pioneered the new wave of synthesizer bands. Soft Cell's next recording, "The Girl with the Patent Leather Face," appeared as a contribution to the Some Bizarre compilation album, which featured other (then unknown) bands such as Depeche Mode, The The, and Blancmange. Their first single, "A Man Can Get Lost" 7"/"Memorabilia" 12" was produced by Daniel Miller, the founder of Mute Records. While the single was a club hit, Soft Cell remained essentially unknown.

"Tainted Love"

Showing impatience in the wake of the chart failure of "Memorabilia", Mute Records allowed Soft Cell to record a second and final single in an attempt to score a chart hit. The band opted to record a radically reworked cover version of "Tainted Love", a 1964 northern soul classic originally sung by Gloria Jones (the wife of Marc Bolan) and written by Ed Cobb of The Four Preps.

Released in 1981, Soft Cell's "Tainted Love" was a number-one hit in seventeen countries, including the United Kingdom, as well as a number eight single in the United States during 1982, and went on to set a then-Guinness World Record for the longest consecutive stay on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart (43 weeks). The A-side of the 12 inch single of "Tainted Love" actually featured a two-song medley, with "Tainted Love" blending into the classic Motown hit "Where Did Our Love Go?" by The Supremes. At the peak of the song's popularity, many radio stations opted to play the full medley, utilizing their own edits to shorten the 9-minute track.

According to Marc Almond's book, "Tainted Life," Soft Cell exited the "Tainted Love" recording sessions with only modest expectations that the track might dent the UK Top 50. Further, Almond wrote that his only significant contribution to the song's instrumentation (besides the vocals) was the suggestion that the song begin with a characteristic "bink bink" sound which would repeat periodically throughout. Almond also wrote that he dedicated this song to his on-off partner Christian Andrews. While "Tainted Love" was Soft Cell's only Top 40 hit in the United States, the band had approximately eight Top 40 hits in the UK, including "Bedsitter", "Say Hello, Wave Goodbye", "Torch", and "What!", each of which broke the UK Top 5.

Usually an artist releasing a cover version as a single would write the song that appears on the B-side, as this would still entitle the artist to some songwriting royalties stemming from sales of that single. However, as Soft Cell wrote neither "Tainted Love" nor "Where Did Our Love Go" (the 7" B-side track), they lost the opportunity to make a greater sum of money from songwriting royalties stemming from one of the most popular songs of the '80s. Almond expressed regret for this in his book, and chalked the error up to naivete.

Covers and Sampling

Due to its enduring popularity, Soft Cell's version of "Tainted Love" along with other songs from Non-stop Erotic Cabaret have been covered and sampled a number of times, including:

* A version from argentinian DJ and show host Clotta Lanzetta, now translated as Falso Amor.

* 1984 Coil covered Tainted Love as one half of the double A-Side Panic/Tainted Love this record was the first ever AIDS benefit record and Marc Almond appeared in the video as "Death". Marc would also provide vocals on the group's next release Horse Rotorvator.

* 1992 Inspiral Carpets covered Tainted Love in the NME's Ruby Trax 3CD Box

* 1995 The Alternative Rock group Shades Apart from New Jersey covered Tainted Love in the CD single of 1995 (Revelation 40 PR1)

* 1999 Australian punk/rockabilly band The Living End covered the song as a B-side for their single "All Torn Down".

* 2000 German techno band Scooter covered "Sex Dwarf" on their Sheffield album.

* 2001 Glam/hard rock band Marilyn Manson covered the song on the album Not Another Teen Movie O.S.T. and Lest We Forget: The Best Of Marilyn Manson. Also as a bonus track on The Golden Age of Grotesque.

* 2004 German techno producer Thomas Schumacher samples "Tainted Love" on his single Tainted Schall.

* Industrial band Nine Inch Nails covered the song "Memorabilia" in 1994 which appeared the Closer to God single and on their 10th anniversary re-release of The Downward Spiral in 2004. They also covered "Sex Dwarf" live during the 1989 Pretty Hate Machine tour.

* 2005 Pussycat Dolls covered the Soft Cell version with Tainted Love and Where Did Our Love Go? combined as one song for their debut album, PCD.

* 2006 Lil Scrappy's song's "Money In The Bank" main riff took samples from part of the beat of Tainted Love

* 2006 Rihanna extensively samples "Tainted Love" on the single "SOS" from her album A Girl Like Me.

* 2006 Psytrance producer Bulletproof samples "Tainted Love" on the vinyl EP Tainted Love.

* 2007 DJ Richard Grey samples "Tainted Love" on "Warped Base". Drum-and-Bass-style single, the vocal version still features Mark Almond's vocals.

* 2007 Chicago electronic duo Microfilm do not cover Soft Cell, but name-check their album NonStop Erotic Cabaret (as well as NonStop Ecstatic Dancing) in the lyrics of their track 'Non-Stop Dreaming'; Soft Cell were an influence on the original sound of Microfilm's early tracks.

Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret

Their first album, Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret, further explored the trademark Soft Cell themes of squalor and sleaze. "Seedy Films" talks of long nights in porno cinemas, while "Frustration" and "Secret Life" deal with the boredom and hypocrisy associated with suburban life. A companion video entitled Non-Stop Exotic Video Show was released alongside the album and featured videos directed by Tim Pope, who later found fame as director of music videos by The Cure. The video generated some controversy in Britain, mainly due to the scandal involved with the "Sex Dwarf" promotional film. The original version of the music video featured Almond and Ball in a bloody butcher shop surrounded by chainsaws, nude actors, and dwarves. However, the film was confiscated by police and censored before it was even released. As a tongue-in-cheek substitute, a re-filmed "Sex Dwarf" appeared in Non-Stop Exotic Video Show featuring Almond dressed in a tuxedo, directing a symphony orchestra of dwarves.

In 1982, the duo spent most of their time recording and relaxing in New York City, where they met a woman named Cindy Ecstasy. It was Cindy Ecstasy who introduced them to the new club drug of the same name. By their own admission, most of Non-stop Ecstatic Dancing was recorded and mixed under the influence of ecstasy.

By now, the shadow of "Tainted Love" was beginning to haunt the band, and the pressures of stardom, not to mention the constant drug use, were taking their toll. Marc Almond also formed the group Marc and the Mambas, featuring collaborations with The The's Matt Johnson and future Almond collaborator Annie Hogan, as an offshoot in order to experiment out of the glare of the Soft Cell spotlight. Soft Cell followed their remix album with a full length album appropriately titled The Art of Falling Apart. The singles were modest successes in Britain. Again, Soft Cell courted some controversy when their second single from the album, "Numbers," was banned from the BBC due to references in the song to the drug speed.

By 1983, they had decided amicably to dissolve the band and released one final album called This Last Night in Sodom, a critical success but a commercial failure. The album departed from its predecessors by having a much grittier feel, featuring more live drums and guitars than previous albums. However, the controversial subject matter still remained true to the Soft Cell ethos, with songs such as "L'Esqualita" that glamourized transvestite culture in Manhattan.

Solo years

During Almond's solo years, he and Ball continued to keep in touch. Dave Ball's wife played cello in Marc Almond's solo band. Almond and David Ball did not work again together until the nineties, when Ball arranged some music for Almond's "Tenement Symphony." David Ball formed The Grid in 1990. The Grid split up in 1996, but reformed in 2003.

Reunion

Almond and Ball's reunion as Soft Cell became official with well-received initial concerts - they performed at the opening of the Ocean nightclub in London in March 2001 to strong reviews, and a mini tour followed later in the year. The album Cruelty Without Beauty was released in late 2002, followed by a European tour in early 2003. The new album featured their first new songs together in almost twenty years. One of those songs was their 2003 single "The Night" (UK #39). Interestingly, Soft Cell had considered recording "The Night" back in 1981 in place of "Tainted Love" as their last-ditch attempt to score a chart hit. In a 2003 interview with BBC's Top of the Pops, keyboardist David Ball asserted, "I think history has kind of shown that we did make the right choice [in 1981]."

In August 2007 the band announced they were working on a remix album, "Heat - The Remixes". The remix album is expected to be released in late October 2007 and will include classic Soft Cell tracks remixed by such acts as Manhattan Clique, Cicada, Richard X, Ladytron, MHC, Mark Moore, Kinky Roland, Spektrum, George Demure, Yer Man and many more

Camouflage is a German synthpop and dance music trio consisting of Marcus Meyn, Heiko Maile and Oliver Kreyssig. Their only Hot 100 entry was "The Great Commandment" which climbed to #59 in 1989. The song did spend three weeks at #1 on the Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart. They also had two additional minor hits in the dance chart in 1989.

HISTORY

In 1983, Heiko Maile, Marcus Meyn, Martin Kahling and Oliver Kreyssig, four friends from Bietigheim-Bissingen, Germany, founded the band "Licenced Technology." In 1984, Martin Kahling left the band. Soon after, the group renamed itself "Camouflage," inspired by a "Yellow Magic Orchestra" song of the same name. The three young musicians set up their first studio in the basement of Heiko's parents' house, calling it "Boy's Factory." Their first live gigs at local music clubs soon followed. That next year, Camouflage recorded two demo tapes at their studio, and in 1986, the group won a local radio music contest - after a friend of theirs handed one of the demos in. A small Frankfurt music label, "Westside," showed interest in taking Camouflage on. There, the song "The Great Commandment" was recorded to be presented to bigger music companies. After considering offers from several record companies, Camouflage decided to sign a contract with Metronome.

Working with Axel Henninger, Camouflage re-recorded "The Great Commandment" in Axel's studio in 1987. The single was released in September of that year and rose to number 14 in the German charts. Their follow-up single "Stranger Thoughts" was released in February 1988, rising to number 20. In March, "Voices & Images," Camouflage's debut album, was released. The album topped the US Billboard Dance Charts twice having been played often by small independent radio stations. In New York, Heiko, Oli and Marcus signed a contract with the US label Atlantic that same year, releasing "Voices & Images" and the single "That Smiling Face" for the US market in the fall of 1988. In an old factory loft near their hometown, Heiko, Oli and Marcus set up "Boy's Factory 2," their new studio.

With producer Dan Lacksman of Telex, the band recorded a new album "Methods of Silence" at Synsound Studio in Brussels that following year. Now left to experiment more freely after the commercial success of their first album, Dan's recording work revealed an interesting mix of digital high-tech and out-dated studio equipment. Single "Love is a Shield" (position 9 in German charts) stayed in the charts for over six months, and the album reached 13. After follow-up single "One Fine Day," the band embarked on their first live concert tour to great financial success.

More recently Polydor released "Archive#1 (Rare Tracks)", a new Camouflage compilation. Expected in the shops by November 20th 2007 the release brings together a host of rare tracks and remixes spread over two discs

C.C.C.P. was a German high-energy techno and rock band, led by Rasputin Stoy. They were best known for their 1986 instrumental American-Soviets, released by Clockwork Germany. This six-minute song themed on the Cold War became a major hit at dance clubs. Their 1990 song "Don't Kill The Rainforest" was also a minor alternative radio hit. C.C.C.P. recorded a couple of albums through 1996 but never found much commercial success.

Dead or Alive is a British New Wave band from Liverpool that rose to popularity during the 1980s. They are best known for their #1 UK hit single "You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)", though the band have gained their biggest following in Japan, where they have attained 18 number 1 hits.

BAND MEMBERS

The band members have included the following musicians.

* Pete Burns (1981-present): Vocalist of the band and chief songwriter. Burns did not play any instruments but mimed with an electric guitar in some music videos.

* Wayne Hussey (1982-1984): An early member of the band who wrote most songs in 1982-1983, plus the Epic singles Misty Circles and What I Want. Hussey departed in early 1984 to join The Sisters of Mercy for one year, and then formed The Mission in late 1985.

* Mike Percy (1982-1990): Bass player. Percy was noted for his mullet hairstyle and, along with Lever, wrote most of Dead or Alive's songs from 1984 until 1990. Percy wrote and performed the backing track for the hit song "You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)".

* Steve Coy (1982-Present): Drummer for the band. The youngest member of the band, Coy wrote music for the band but did not delve into the world of lyrics. As of 1996, Coy took over the job of producing Dead or Alive's videos starting with the David Bowie cover "Rebel Rebel" from the album Nukleopatra.

* Timothy Lever (1983-1990): keyboards, saxophone, guitars. Lever and guitarist Mike Percy were responsible for most of the songwriting for the band.

* Jason Alburey (1996-Present): Eventually replaced Percy and Lever in the musical department, Alburey was instrumental in the formation of Dead or Alive's modernising sound. Alburey appears in the 2006 video for the re-release of "You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)" despite having nothing to do with the song itself.

OVERVIEW

Early career of band

Dead or Alive (DOA for short, not to be confused with punk band D.O.A.), was founded in 1980 in Liverpool by Pete Burns, who was encouraged by local music promoters to gather a band together based on his outrageous appearance alone. It was only after rehearsing in 1978 with some friends that Burns realized he really did have a powerful singing voice, and his first band was an outfit he formed with friends Julian Cope and Pete Wylie. Dubbing themselves The Mystery Girls, they played only one gig before disintegrating. Burns returned in 1979 with a new band, Nightmares in Wax, featuring a gothic post-punk sound. Nightmares in Wax released their only recording, a three-track 7" EP titled Birth of a Nation in 1979/1980.

In 1980, just before they were to record a radio session for John Peel, Burns changed the name of the band to the more marketable Dead or Alive. The band went through several different lineup changes over the next three years while recording a series of independent singles. Burns' eccentric appearance began attracting attention, often leading to comparisons with Boy George, lead singer of the band Culture Club, who hit the music scene just a few years after Dead Or Alive.

When Dead or Alive's singles started placing high in the Indie charts, Epic Records took notice and signed the band in 1983. Their first release for Epic was the single "Misty Circles", which failed to chart. At this point, the band was a five-piece consisting of Burns, Mike Percy (bass), Tim Lever (keyboards/sax), Steve Coy (drums), and Wayne Hussey (guitar). Two more singles, "What I Want" and "I'd Do Anything", were club hits but mainstream success continued to elude the band.

The debut album, Sophisticated Boom Boom, was released in May 1984 and featured Dead or Alive's first Top 40 UK single, a remake of the 1975 hit by KC and the Sunshine Band "That's the Way (I Like It)". Hussey departed Dead or Alive just before the album's release, despite having had a hand in writing much of the material that appears on it. The single peaked at #22 in the UK and the album at #29.

Chart success

Now a stable four-piece, in 1985 they released the album Youthquake, produced by the then-fledgling songwriting/production team of Stock, Aitken and Waterman (SAW). The single "You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)" went to #1 on the UK singles chart after having lingered outside the Top 40 for over two months after release; the song was SAW's first chart-topping single and remains a club favourite two decades later. It reached #11 in the US, #3 in Australia and experienced Top 10 status in numerous countries. Several other tracks from the album were released as singles: "Lover Come Back to Me", "In Too Deep" and "My Heart Goes Bang", all becoming huge dance hits.

In 1986, Dead or Alive released their third album, Mad, Bad, and Dangerous to Know, also produced by SAW. The album included one of the band's best-known songs, "Brand New Lover", which was more successful in the US (#15) than in the band's native UK (#31). Three additional singles from the album were released, all of them meeting some sort of controversy. The most successful of these singles in the UK (a #12 hit) was "Something in My House", tonally very Gothic and with a sleeve depicting Burns in front of what appears to be a Satanic altar, featuring an inverted crucifix. A 12" version of the song, the 'Mortevicar Mix', featured sampling of dialogue from the soundtrack of The Exorcist. A third single, "Hooked on Love", suffered from very little promotion due to what the record company felt was a "Gothic" overtone that had been added to the song in a post-production remix, and barely managed to scrape into the UK top 70. The picture sleeve to the fourth single, "I'll Save You All My Kisses", originally featured Burns with a metal "Sex" belt buckle in front of his lips, but Epic covered up the word "Sex" with a sticker that said "Kiss" after retailers objected. The video was banned by MTV because of its overtly gay content, which depicted Burns in black tights and a leather jacket singing the song from a baseball diamond while a number of men, some of them shirtless, clung to a fence and ogled him. However, despite these setbacks, the band continued to have chart success in Australia, Europe and (particularly) Japan, where they had reached superstar status with nine #1 singles up to 1988.

In 1988, they parted ways with Stock, Aitken and Waterman and in 1989 released the self-produced Nude, which featured the hit "Turn Around and Count 2 Ten", a single that spent seventeen weeks at #1 on the Japanese charts. It was followed-up by "Come Home with Me Baby", which hit #1 in Brazil. Elsewhere, the single was a club hit, but it failed to generate significant radio play, partially due to a reactionary attitude toward the song's seemingly casual attitude toward sex at a time when AIDS awareness was coming into the public consciousness.

Later releases

1990 saw the release of Fan the Flame (Part 1); however, the album was only released in Japan. The album was a radical departure in style. Instead of high energy dance beats, the album had more of a 1970s disco style crossed with lounge-style vocals. The album had three singles, "Your Sweetness (Is Your Weakness)", "Gone Too Long", and "Unhappy Birthday". Fan the Flame (Part 1) also is notable because it contains the very first ballad that Dead or Alive ever recorded, a seasonal track called "Blue Christmas" (an original composition and not a cover of the song popularized by Elvis Presley).

For several years, Dead or Alive was mostly inactive in the recording studio, until Pete Burns resurfaced in 1993 as vocalist on a single for the Italian techno outfit Glam. Burns helped write the single, "Sex Drive", which was a major return to the dancefloor. Burns and Coy flirted with the idea of recording under the name International Chrysis, and released a single as such in 1994, a cover version of David Bowie's "Rebel Rebel".

1995 saw a resurrection of the Dead or Alive moniker for the album Nukleopatra, which was eagerly anticipated by the band's large fan base. The album featured a smattering of previously released material, including "Rebel Rebel", "Sex Drive", and two tracks that originally appeared on Fan the Flame (Part 1), "Gone Too Long" and "Unhappy Birthday". The album also featured a cover of Blondie's "Picture This". Initially released in Japan only, Nukleopatra, unlike its predecessor, was also released in Australia, Singapore, South Africa, France and the U.S., and each release sported different cover art, tracklistings and song versions; many releases of Nukleopatra also included one or more remixes of "You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)".

In 2000 Dead or Alive released Fragile, a compilation of remixes with several new tracks and covers including U2's "Even Better Than the Real Thing" and Nick Kamen's "I Promised Myself". A second remix album, Unbreakable, was released in 2001. This was followed by a greatest hits album called Evolution: the Hits, released in 2003 which featured yet another remix of "You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)"; both of them enjoyed, for the first time since Nude, a UK release, with "You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)" re-entering the top forty.

In 2004, Burns enjoyed solo success with the Pet Shop Boys-produced track "Jack and Jill Party". Although only released through the Pet Shop Boys website, the track reached number 75 in the UK singles chart and was an underground club hit.

DEAD OR ALIVE IN CONCERT

In 1987 the band embarked on their world tour which consisted of dates in Europe, Japan and the USA. The dates in Japan (Tokyo and Osaka) were filmed and released on VHS. For the tour, the band remixed several of their songs including 1984's "You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)" and "My Heart Goes Bang".

It was widely believed that the concert was entirely mimed; however, parts of the show were live, while others were pre-recorded or mimed. Whereas Burns mimed to a vocal track, the band (Coy, Lever and Percy) played the backing track live while two dancers mimed the guitar solos.

The tour was re-released in 2003 on the Evolution DVD. It was also released as a Laserdisc and as a CD (though the CD version was not a live recording).

NOTABLE HITS

Although the 1984 song "You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)" may have been the band's biggest success in North America and at home, their biggest hit in Japan, the 1989 track "Turn Around and Count 2 Ten" topped the Japanese charts for seventeen weeks.

The band's other major UK hits were the 1986 track "Something in My House", 1985's "Lover Come Back to Me" and "In Too Deep" (of the same year).

You Spin Me Round

* After their height of success during the 1980s, the original band parted in 1990 when songwriters and musicians Tim Lever and Mike Percy left to form careers as mixers and producers. The pair currently own and operate Steelworks Studios in Sheffield, UK [1]. As recordists, Lever and Percy have had more chart success than they ever did with Dead or Alive, writing and mixing number-one tracks from bands like S Club 7, Blue and Robbie Williams.

* Pete Burns and Steve Coy joined keyboard player Jason Alburey in 1996 and have continued to record and play venues ever since. Though they have never replicated the success of 1985, Dead or Alive still command a large international following.

* Dead or Alive (and sometimes Burns as a solo artist) have played international Gay Pride concerts since the mid 1990s. During the 1990s, Pete Burns was still married and had not publicly acknowledged his sexuality.

CELEBRITY BIG BROTHER

In 2006, Pete Burns took part in the TV show Celebrity Big Brother in the UK. His eccentric appearance, surprising behaviour and explosive attitude made him a staple character in the show, which received huge audiences. Burns became known for openly insulting actress Traci Bingham and performing modern dance with socialist politician George Galloway. Following the end of the show (Burns finished in fourth place), the Youthquake version of "You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)" was re-released and reached the top five in the UK singles chart. Burns himself expressed distaste for the re-release, he is quoted as saying "it's like wearing a school uniform at the age of 46".

* Due to Pete Burns' slight resemblance to the more well-known gender-bending pop star Boy George during the mid-1980s, many outside of the UK assumed Dead or Alive was a response to, or a copy of, the band Culture Club. However Dead or Alive was formed a year before the formation of Culture Club.

* Pete was married to his wife Lynne for about 25 years before they divorced.

* According to Steve Coy, the album name "Nukleopatra" had several meanings. It is intended to be pronounced "New Cleopatra", symbolising Pete Burns' ancient Egyptian theme in the mid 1990s.

* During the 1987 Rip It Up! Live tour, other artists including Michael Jackson cancelled dates in order to avoid clashing with the hugely popular Dead or Alive in Japan.

* Band member Tim Lever often wore hats and head coverings in videos and live appearances. This was due to his increasing loss of hair throughout the 1980s. Lever is absent from some videos including "I'll Save You All My Kisses" and "Turn Around & Count 2 Ten".

* Burns references homosexuality in some of his lyrics. The most obvious example of this is in the 1984 song "I Wanna Be a Toy".

* Pete Burns once turned down an offer for Dead or Alive to tour with Madonna, because his mother had taken ill and was on the verge of dying.

* The music video for "Something in My House" ran into censorship problems due to a shot of Burns peeling a banana. Pete Burns jokes about this in the inlay text for the 2003 DVD release of Evolution.

* Around 1986, an independent club single called "Pistol in My Pocket" appeared by an artist called Lanah Pellay (a transexual, who later was to change sex once more & become Alan Pellay and feature in Comic Strip films). Due to the single's Hi-NRG sound, the gender-bending image of the singer on the cover, and most specifically the vocal styling (which emulated Pete Burns with uncanny accuracy), "Lanah Pellay" was rumored by many to actually be Pete Burns recording under another name. It wasn't, but the rumor still exists today, which is a little odd given that Lanah performed the song on Top of the Pops.

* Similarly, a 12" single exists recorded by a band called "The Mystery Girls", which many mistakenly believe to be a recording by the original early band featuring Pete Burns, Pete Wylie, and Julian Cope.

Yazoo (known as Yaz in the U.S.) was a short-lived but highly successful English synthpop duo from Basildon, Essex that had a number of top ten hits in the British charts in the early 1980s.

Heavily influenced by earlier bands like Kraftwerk, Yazoo expanded upon the synthpop formula by juxtaposing Alison Moyet's bluesy and emotional vocals with Vince Clarke's clinical electronic hooks. Its sound referenced disco but added a more disaffected attitude that disco lacked. Their second album saw greater songwriting input from Moyet, adding a rather more mature and soulful flavour, particularly on the hit single "Nobody's Diary."

The group was formed in 1981, using a moniker that Alison Moyet, veteran of a number of southeast Essex based punk and rock bands, had seen on the labels of old blues albums: Yazoo, although Clarke would later confess that this came from mis-hearing the name of the mouth instrument Kazoo which was popular in the late 1970s. Clarke had been the main songwriter in Depeche Mode, who at that point had recorded one album and three singles for Mute Records, including the hits "New Life" and "Just Can't Get Enough". Clarke surprised many by quitting Depeche Mode just as they were beginning to reap success, claiming that they "just weren't getting on, really", forming Yazoo with the then relatively unknown Moyet. Mute Records continued to release the output of this new Clarke project. The band was licensed to Sire Records in the United States.

Its debut single "Only You" backed with "Situation," was released in April 1982 and rose to number two in the UK. Clarke had offered the song as a parting gift to his former bandmates in Depeche Mode, but they declined. Yazoo quickly scored another hit with the next single, "Don't Go," which hit number three, and became popular on MTV in the United States thanks to a Frankenstein-themed video. They continued their successful streak with their first album, Upstairs at Eric's, which went platinum in Britain. The band received favourable reviews for their pioneering sound. Clarke and Moyet toured briefly, while releasing a stopgap single, "The Other Side of Love."

The duo's second and last album, You and Me Both, yielded more success, hitting the top of the UK charts, and spinning off one single. The album's success was tainted by Clarke and Moyet deciding to go their separate ways.

Moyet decided to venture off on a solo career, signing to Columbia Records, where she would enjoy a great deal of early success. Vince Clarke recorded a single with producer Eric Radcliffe (the same "Eric" from the title of Yazoo's debut album) and Undertones singer Feargal Sharkey as The Assembly, and another with vocalist Paul Quinn. Clarke then founded the highly successful pop group Erasure with vocalist Andy Bell.

Mute Records released a remixed version of "Situation" as a single in 1990 to moderate success. In 1999, a compilation was released, entitled Only Yazoo - The Best of and was preceded by a re-release of Yazoo's debut single, "Only You", featuring a new remix of the title track and several more of "Don't Go". The band's output was bookended with yet another release of "Situation", accompanied by many remixes.

Clarke was tapped to remix Moyet's 1994 single, "Whispering Your Name" and with Erasure, Clarke and Moyet tried to record her single "This House" as a duet. This project never came to surface, because Sony Music Entertainment would not permit it.

The band's songs have appeared in a number of films and television shows. "Only You" was used in the Napoleon Dynamite, the BBC television series The Office, and the film Can't Hardly Wait; a cover version of "Only You" by Joshua Radin was used in 2007 in a JC Penney commercial; "Don't Go" appeared in the BBC series I'm Alan Partridge, was used in the movie Tango and Cash, and can be heard in the video game Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories; the song "Situation" was used in the 1990 tv movie "Exile" and was also used in a Nintendo commercial highlighting the classic edition of the Game Boy Advance SP and the classic NES games ported to it. Big Country was a rock band from Dunfermline, Scotland, popular in the early to mid 1980s but still are releasing material for a cult following since 2004. The band was notable for music heavily accented with traditional Scottish folk and martial music styles, as well as for playing and engineering their guitar sound to resemble the bagpipes, fiddles and other traditional folk instruments.

Composed of Stuart Adamson (formerly of The Skids, vocals / guitar / keyboards), Bruce Watson (guitar / vocals), Tony Butler (bass guitar / vocals) and Mark Brzezicki (drums / percussion / vocals) though a variety of other drummers have been in the band their long career, including Simon Phillips. Pete Wishart who joined Runrig and became prominent in the SNP, was in an early version of the band -- the same incarnation that supported Alice Cooper and got thrown off the tour for being "too weird". Although the band's music drew from Scottish traditional music, none of its members were born in Scotland. Adamson grew up in Dunfermline, and as such, his trademark Scottish accent was genuine.

Formed initially as a five piece band in 1981, their first single was "Harvest Home", recorded and released in 1982. It was a modest success, reaching #91 on the UK Singles Chart. Their next single was 1983's "Fields of Fire", which reached the UK's Top Ten and was rapidly followed by the album The Crossing. The album was a hit in the United States, powered by "In a Big Country", their only U.S. Top 40 hit single. The song featured heavily engineered guitar playing, strongly reminiscent of bagpipes; Adamson and fellow guitarist, Watson, achieved this through the use of the MXR Pitch Transposer 129 Guitar Effect. Also contributing to the band's unique sound was their early virtuoso use of the e-bow, a device which allows a guitar to sound more like strings or synthesizer. The Crossing sold over a million copies in the UK and obtained gold record status (sales of over 500,000) in the U.S.

The band released the non-LP extended play single Wonderland in 1984 while undergoing a lengthy worldwide tour. The song, considered by some critics to be one of their finest, was a Top Ten hit (#8) in the UK singles chart but despite heavy airplay and a positive critical response, was a comparative flop in the U.S., only reaching #86 on the Billboard Hot 100. It was the last single by the band to make a U.S. chart appearance.

Their second album Steeltown (1984) was a hit as soon as it was released, entering the UK Albums Chart at Number one. The album featured three UK Top 40 hit singles, and received considerable critical acclaim on both sides of the Atlantic, but like Wonderland (and, in fact, all subsequent releases) it was a commercial disappointment in the U.S, peaking at #70 on the Billboard album charts.

Throughout 1984 and 1985, the band toured the UK, Europe, and, to a lesser extent, the U.S., both as headliners themselves and in support of such artists as Queen and Roger Daltrey. They also recorded prolifically, and provided the musical score to a Scottish independent film, 'Restless Natives' (1985), which was not released on CD until years later on the band's Restless Natives and Rarities (1998) collection.

1986's The Seer, the band's third album, was another big success in the UK, peaking at Number 2, and producing three additional Top 40 UK singles. These included "Look Away" which reached Number 7 (the band's highest charting UK single). Kate Bush provided backing vocals on the title cut, and, as was the norm for the band at the time, the album received good reviews from the music press. In the U.S., the album sold modestly better than Steeltown, reaching #59 on the Billboard album charts.

This album showed the band's loyalty to Scottish Nationalist themes, with "The Seer" being about a woman who tells a traveller about the tyranny of William of Orange upon the Jacobites movement coming to an end soon; while "The Red Fox" was based on Kidnapped by Robert Louis Stevenson, and the so called Appin Murder of Colin Campbel, a Tory who was hated by many in Scotland around 1752.

In what some critics felt was an apparent attempt to regain their dwindling U.S. following,[5] Big Country hooked up with producer Peter Wolf for their next album, Peace in Our Time (1988), which was recorded in Los Angeles, California. The result was very different from the previous singles and albums, and it was not well received by most critics and fans. One reviewer noted that it was the group's "least representative and least interesting album." It sold poorly.

In 1991, the band was dropped by Phonogram, the label that had released all of their material for ten years. After that, Big Country became a minor act, popping up in the lower echelons of the charts in the UK and Europe with the release of every subsequent album. Only one of these, 1993's The Buffalo Skinners, received a major label release (via Chrysalis Records); it seemed a return to form of sorts for the band, and obtained a surprisingly enthusiastic critical response. But its sales were meagre and, in retrospect, it can be seen as Big Country's last, lost chance to regain a mass audience. Regardless, the band retained an intensely devoted cult following, as evidenced by their deceptively large post-1990 discography, which consists mostly of live concert recordings and singles/rarities collections.

Throughout the 1990s, Big Country became a popular 'opening act', supporting such bands as Rolling Stones and The Who; Roger Daltrey reportedly uttered on numerous occasions that he'd 'love to steal their rhythm section!'. (In fact, Big Country had backed Daltrey on his 1985 solo album Under The Raging Moon, and Tony Butler played bass and backing vocals on Pete Townshend's 1980 hit single "Let My Love Open The Door". Both Butler and Brzezicki performed on Townshend's 1985 solo album White City: A Novel.

Of growing concern, however, was the mental and emotional health of lead singer Adamson, who reportedly had struggled with alcoholism for several years. Adamson split with his first wife, who later spoke to Scottish and English tabloids about his heavy drinking. He moved to Nashville, in the mid 1990s, where he took up residence and married a hairdresser. While in Nashville, he met noted artist Marcus Hummon and released an acclaimed studio album with him, under the moniker The Raphaels.

In 1995 Big Country released another album Why the Long Face?.

1999 saw the release of Big Country's eighth and final studio album, Driving to Damascus (titled in its slightly different, augmented U.S. release John Wayne's Dream). Adamson said publicly that he was disappointed that the album did not fare better on the charts, which led to depression. Later that year, he disappeared for a while before resurfacing, stating that he had just needed some time off.

Adamson returned for the band's 'Final Fling' farewell tour, culminating in a sold-out concert at Glasgow's Barrowland Ballroom on 29 May 2000. Although that marked the end of Big Country as a touring band, they were always adamant that they would appear together again. They played what turned out to be their last gig in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, in October that year.

In November 2001, Adamson disappeared again. Numerous appeals were put on the Big Country website asking for Adamson to call home and speak to anyone in the band, the management company, or his ex-wife. The website also requested that any fans who might have been 'harbouring' the singer to contact the management company and alert them to his whereabouts. Brzezicki and Butler had indicated they were concerned but the reason Big Country had lasted so long was they stayed out of one another's personal lives, and both later noted they were unaware of the extent of Adamson's problems. He was found dead in a room at the Best Western Plaza Hotel in Honolulu, Hawaii on December 16, 2001. The official autopsy revealed that he had hanged himself.

A memorial to Adamson was held at Dunfermline’s Carnegie Hall in January 2002, followed by a tribute concert at the Barrowlands in May. It brought together the remaining members of both Big Country and The Skids; Adamson's teenage children, Callum and Kirsten; as well as Steve Harley, Runrig, Simon Townshend, Midge Ure and Bill Nelson.

In 2007, to celebrate 25 years of Big Country, founder members Bruce Watson, Tony Butler (now lead vocalist for the first time), and Mark Brzezicki have reunited to embark on a tour of the UK with dates in Scotland and England.

Clan of Xymox, also known as Xymox at various parts of their career, are a darkwave/gothic rock band founded in Nijmegen, the Netherlands, in 1983 by Ronny Moorings, Pieter Nooten, and Anke Wolbert. Of the original members, only Ronny Moorings remains in the band today.

The band began with the self-published Subsequent Pleasures EP under the name Xymox, at that time consisting of Moorings on guitar and vocals, Anke Wolbert on bass, keyboards and vocals, and Pieter Nooten on keyboards. A chance meeting with Brendan Perry and Lisa Gerrard of Dead Can Dance led to an invitation to support that band on a UK tour, and then a recording contract with their record label, 4AD Records.

Their debut album, self-titled under their newly adopted name Clan of Xymox, was released by 4AD in 1985, and drew comparisons to Joy Division and The Cure. 1986 saw their second album, Medusa (considered by many fans to be their finest work), continuing in this dark vein.

1987 saw the band provide a track for Lonely Is an Eyesore, a fascinating compilation album highlighting the diversity of talent on the 4-AD roster. "Muscoviet Musquito", sandwiched between Dif Juz and Dead Can Dance, showed a more confident side to the band. Album number two was a very different beast.

Subsequently, Clan of Xymox and 4AD parted company, Pieter Nooten left the band, the name Xymox was once again adopted, and the band signed to the Polygram subsidiary label Wing Records. 1989's Twist of Shadows was the band's most commercially successful album, selling 300,000 copies. It was in many ways a bold record and showed that being signed to a major concern wasn't going to stifle a natural sense of musical adventure. Supported by three single releases - "Obsession", "Imagination" and "Blind Hearts" - this was an album that confirmed the diversity of their appeal as again they clicked in both dance and alternative circles.

The bands fourth album, Phoenix (with Nooten back on board), released worldwide in 1991, was their last album on Wing. It had ecstatic reviews but did not sell as much as their predecessor, despite their loyal U.S. fan base. The band embarked on sell-out tours around the world and featured in college alternative and mainstream Billboard charts. The sub label Wing ceased to exist and when Wing declined to release the next album, Metamorphosis, Nooten and Wolbert left the band forever.

Mojca Zugna joined Moorings as bass-player (and album cover designer) and two albums followed on independent label Zok Records - Metamorphosis (1992) and Headclouds (1994) - before Moorings decided it was time for a change. Here, in addition to their trademark choral sounds and hypnotic electro rhythms, are albums spanning a whole range of styles and influences, taking Xymox into the '90s dance era. It is the work of a band who are never afraid to take chances. In the UK they nearly entered the top 40 charts with the "Reaching Out" single and were played on heavy rotation. "On Headclouds, Xymox tried to combine dance grooves with a melancholic sound, plus vocals. It was part of an experiment which we now steer clear of... After Headclouds, I moved back to Amsterdam and had a break from making music, and regained my interest by meeting different people, going to Industrial/Gothic parties, and basically rediscovering myself again".[1]

In 1994 Xymox re-released their first (from 1984, only 500 original printed copies exist) limited availability mini album Subsequent Pleasures on Double Dutch Records, and, without consent, Zok Records released a "Remix" album which contains only radio edits of the albums Metamorphosis and Headclouds compiled together.

In 1996 Xymox contributed music for a CD-ROM games project titled "Total Mayhem" and a year later the music for the game "Revenant", released worldwide by Domark.

In 1997 Ronny Moorings ended the Xymox era and restarted Clan of Xymox. The band signed to a brand new USA and German based Independent label Tess Records, and the album Hidden Faces was released in 1997. Moorings described it as "a logical follow-up to what Clan of Xymox made in the early '80s", and the band went on to tour extensively, co-headlining the Wave-Gotik-Treffen and Zillo festivals in Germany, where two singles from Hidden Faces - "Out Of The Rain" and "This World" - both reached the top 10 in the independent charts. Two more albums (1999's Creatures and 2001's Notes From The Underground) followed, blending guitars and electronics into a more standard electro-goth sound which has won Clan of Xymox a new generation of fans in the gothic subculture.

The year 2002 saw in April the band's first remix album Remixes From The Underground, which was composed of all the tracks from Notes From The Underground remixed by renowned artists like Front 242 and Assemblage 23. This year also saw the very first video disc of COX.

The current lineup of Clan of Xymox is Ronny Moorings, Mojca Zugna, Denise Dijkstra (keyboards), Agnes Jasper (alternate keyboardist), and Mario Usai (guitarist). Farewell was released in September 2003, and the band's most recent album, Breaking Point, was released in April 2006. The CD single Heroes, containing two interpretations of David Bowie's original track "Heroes", was released in May 2007. The Lotus Eaters was the name of a 1980s New Wave band from Liverpool, England, whose single "The First Picture of You," from their debut album, No Sense of Sin (1984), became a hit in the UK.

The Lotus Eaters formed in 1982, and were mistakenly included in the New Romantic movement when they first appeared. However, although Peter Coyle (vocals), Jeremy Kelly (guitar), Mike Dempsey (bass guitar), and Stephen Creese (drums) had the elegant attire, and fashionable haircuts of New Romantic bands, their music was more understated and folksy than the synthesized Euro disco of Japan, Visage and Duran Duran. The Lotus Eaters toured extensively throughout Japan, despite arguments with their record label over there.

In 1998, The First Picture of You, a compilation of the Lotus eaters' BBC Radio 1 sessions, was released, and the No Sense of Sin album was reissued on CD with bonus tracks.

In 2002, The Lotus Eaters, reduced to the duo of Peter Coyle (vocalist) (born 25 January 1962, Liverpool) and Jeremy Kelly (guitarist - formerly with The Wild Swans) (born 8 April 1962, Liverpool), reformed after almost two decades, to record and release a new album, entitled Silentspace.

C81 was a cassette that was obtained through the British magazine New Musical Express in 1981 (hence (C)assette 81) and released in conjunction with the record label Rough Trade. Intended to mark the first 5 years of the independent label movement in the UK record industry and Rough Trade itself, it was the first in a series of many cassette releases from the paper. Probably the best known (and derided) was the C86 compliation. Publishing a tape was also an acknowledgment of the flourishing self published cassette culture of the time that the NME had been supporting in its short lived Garageland column.

C81 was compiled by NME journalist Roy Carr, and Christopher Rose, who worked in public relations for Rough Trade. To get a copy, NME readers had to collect two coupons from the newspaper and send off £1.50. The 15,000 orders were sold out within a month.

The tape contained a set of 24 diverse tracks ranging from jazz (James Blood Ulmer), poetry (John Cooper Clarke), ska (The Beat), and the folksy 'Canterbury Scene' (Robert Wyatt). C86 is the name of a celebrated cassette compilation released by the British music magazine New Musical Express (NME) in 1986, featuring new bands licenced from independent labels of the time. As a phrase it quickly evolved into shorthand for a musical genre best remembered for its devotion to Byrdsy guitars and fey melodies even though other musical styles were represented on the tape. Almost a term of abuse on release, and criticised for its associations with tweeness and underachievement many now argue that it represents a pivotal moment for independent music in the UK.

The tape was a belated follow up to C81, a more diverse collection of new bands, released by NME in 1981 in conjunction with the label Rough Trade. C86 was similarly designed to reflect the new music scene of the time and compiled by NME writers; Roy Carr, Neil Taylor and Adrian Thrills who licenced tracks from labels such as Creation, Pink, and Ron Johnson. Readers had to pay for the tape via mail order although an LP was subsequently released on Rough Trade in 1987. The UK music press, in this period, was extremely competitive with 3 weekly papers documenting new bands and trends and the grouping of bands, often artificially, with an overarching label to heighten interest or sell copies was commonplace. NME journalists of the period now agree that C86 was a typical example but also a byproduct of NME's "hip hop wars"; a schism on the paper (and amongst readers) between enthusiasts of the contemporary progressive black music such as Public Enemy and Mantronix and the fans of traditional white rock.

This was the 23rd NME tape although its catalogue number was NME022, C81 had been dubbed COPY001. The rest of the tapes were compilations promoting labels' back catalogues and dedicated to R&B, Northern Soul, Jazz or Reggae. C86 was followed up with a Billie Holiday compilation; Holiday Romance. The title of the tape, like its predecessor C81, was a play on the labelling and length of blank compact cassettes that were sold in the 80s such as C60, C90 and C120s and obviously the year in which the tape was released.

The C86 tape, despite its subsequent association with a genre of the same name, had a much harder punkier shambling sound featuring early tracks from as many as 5 bands from the Ron Johnson label; The Shrubs, A Witness, Stump, bIG fLAME and The Mackenzies. Their loud quirkiness was completely at odds with the Byrdsy guitars and fey melodies of what came to be known as 'C86' bands. NME promoted it in conjunction with London's Institute of Contemporary Arts, who staged a week of gigs in July 1986 which featured most of the acts on the compilation.

The Lover Speaks

The Lover Speaks was the new wave duo of David Freeman (vocals), and Joseph Hughes (arranger, composer). They sang the original version of the song "No More I Love You's," which became a huge hit for Annie Lennox in 1995.

Freeman and Hughes formed The Lover Speaks (deriving the name from Roland Barthes' A Lover's Discourse) in 1985, after working together in the punk outfit the Flys. Dave Stewart of the Eurythmics got the duo a record deal with A&M Records, and their self-titled debut was released the following year. Freeman's vocals received praise, but the album never really took off. "No More I Love You's", the first single fell off the British charts after rising to #58. They opened for the Eurythmics during the 1986 tour.

They returned to the studio and recorded another album, The Big Lie some time later, only to face a hostile A&M Records, which refused to release it. The duo then split; Freeman went on to release a few solo albums in the 1990s.

Annie Lennox covered the song No More I Love You's in 1995 on her Medusa album, taking it to #2 on the UK.

Secession was a Scottish synth pop band that existed between 1983 and 1987. Secession consisted of Peter J. Thomson, Carole L. Branston, Charlie D. Kelly, and J.L. Seenan. Their singer, Peter J. Thompson, died in the late 1990s.

Secession was mainly on two different labels during their short career: Beggars Banquet and Siren Records. They released a number of singles starting in 1983 until they released their only album, A Dark Enchantment, in late 1987. Read more...

Depeche Mode are an electronic music band formed in 1980 in Basildon, Essex, England. The group's original lineup consisted of David Gahan (lead vocals), Martin Gore (keyboards, guitar, vocals, chief songwriter after 1981), Andrew Fletcher (keyboards) and Vince Clarke (keyboards, chief songwriter 1980–81). The Station That Dares To Be Different...

History

Nicknamed as "The Station That Dares To Be Different", DWXB-FM was the first all-New Wave music radio station in the Philippines. Broadcasting at 102.7 MHz (initially at 102.5 MHz) on the FM dial and from inside a house in Pasay City, Philippines, DWXB-FM, also referred to as WXB-102, acquired legendary status since it vanished from the airwaves on June 9, 1987. DWXB-FM captured the imaginations of Manila youth in the '80s, bringing New Wave music to the Philippine mainstream and inspiring regional rock artists such as The Dawn, The Identity Crisis, and Violent Playground, all of whom were championed by the station at a time when guitar-based OPM was ignored by the other local outlets with the exception of a weekly show on DZRJ-AM in the early '80s.

Prior to switching to New Wave, the DWXB-FM management flirted with disco in the late '70s and then adopted the American Top Forty format in 1982, dubbing itself Cute 102. By 1983, WXB 102 started including New Wave bands from the UK such as Duran Duran, Spandau Ballet, Devo, and Culture Club into the Top Forty mix, due to the influence of DJ Mark Fournier, known over his broadcasts as Magic. In 1984, New Wave began erupting in Manila's dance clubs thanks to the city's mobile discos, who often spun records imported from Europe, and the proliferation of New Wave music videos on Philippine TV. WXB 102 gradually evolved into a New Wave/disco radio station with the late Fournier; The Unbeatable, the alias of Dave Ryan; and Rico Severino, known as J.J.Michaels. WXB 102 briefly competed with another New Wave/disco radio station in Manila, DWBM-FM 105.1 MHz (dubbed as Power 105 FM), in 1985. But this was just the beginning.

Then the peak came. It was only in 1986 when the station went full-blown "new music" in format with the now-immortal line-up of The Morning Man or Inggo & his Request Round-Up at sign-on; Cool Carla; Julius Caesar; George Frederick, who was also the Program Director; Fat Albert & his program Rock Wave; and The Ghost. A pair of blocktime shows that caught the youth market by the neck back then were Radio Manila and Capital Radio, specializing in local underground punk like The Dead Ends and Urban Bandits and U.K. and U.S. imports that characterized a harsher or more avant-garde side to alternative music such as records from Hüsker Dü, Bad Brains, and Half-Man Half-Biscuit. At this point, "The Station That Dares to be Different" became officially known as WXB 102.

Despite its relatively low power of less than 1 kilowatt, WXB 102 developed a huge following in places where its signal could be picked up, creating mainstream hits such as "State of the Nation" by Industry, "The Ghost in You" by The Psychedelic Furs, "Feels Like (Heaven)" by Fiction Factory, and "People Are People" by Depeche Mode.

In 1986, WXB 102 was the Philippines' most influential music station, its popularity putting pressure on regional labels to belatedly release the entire discographies of The Cure, Depeche Mode, Aztec Camera, and U2 and hard-to-find LPs from The Lotus Eaters, China Crisis, Orange Juice, and The Church. On the surface, their New Wave format could be compared to overseas stations like KROQ-FM and CFNY-FM, but WXB 102 probed the genre for deeper cuts and more obscure acts, giving massive exposure to little-known or forgotten New Wave artists from the UK such as The Pale Fountains, Care, Friends Again, Fiat Lux, Martin Ansell, and Private Lives. Unable to compete, Power 105 FM switched to mainstream pop.

The competition between WXB 102 and Power 105 FM had perished by 1986, the latter shelving much of its New Wave music for pop. WXB 102, with the New Wave market to itself and surprising Top Ten ratings, concentrated on pleasing its followers and instead of trying to the masses. The station developed a certain sound - a combination of jangly, romantic pop (Jimmy Jimmy, The Lotus Eaters, Aztec Camera); ethereal, shimmering rock (Care, Echo & the Bunnymen, U2); Gothic dance (The Sisters of Mercy, Siouxsie & the Banshees, Xmal Deutschland); synthesized European disco (Yaz, Depeche Mode, New Order); punk (The Sex Pistols, The Clash, The Dead Kennedys); and an array of spellbinding and undiscovered local talent (The Dawn, Introvoys, Deans December).

While the New Wave era was already pronounced dead in America in 1987, the genre had not even yet peaked in Manila. Albums once unavailable were continuing to be licensed to Philippine labels, thanks to the tastemaking punch of WXB 102. However, 1987 would be its final year. The new Cory Aquino-led government began sequestering properties owned by her predecessor Ferdinand Marcos and his cronies, including the home studio that WXB FM beamed from. At this point, the DJs - including The Morning Man, George Frederick, Fat Albert, Julius Caesar, The Ghost, and Cool Carla - were working for free, spinning New Wave records from 6 a.m. to midnight. On June 9, 1987, despite attempts to keep it on the air, WXB 102, with DJ Allan K. on board, signed off after The Alarm's "Walk Forever By My Side."

In November 1987, seeing that the absence of WXB 102 left a void on Manila radio that could be capitalized upon, NU 107 debuted at 107.5 MHz on the dial with a series of test broadcasts that resurrected 102 staples such as Wire Train, INXS, Echo & the Bunnymen, Depeche Mode, The Pale Fountains, The Housemartins, and Icehouse in what was termed a "New Rock" format. It essentially picked up where WXB 102 left off, debuting late '80s New Wave acts like Black, Crowded House, and Johnny Hates Jazz. However, NU 107 wasn't considered as adventuresome as its predecessor. In late 1987, Power 105 FM had returned to its short-lived New Wave format from the mid-'80s. Power 105 FM, plunged further into the New Wave waters that WXB 102 once swam in. Just as WXB 102 did, it bravely paraded the most rare New Wave records they could find, carving a fanbase for virtually unknown artists such as Eyeless in Gaza, Fruits of Passion, The Explorers, The Room, and White China.

In 1988, Mickey the Clown from WXB 102 reappeared on DWBC-AM as Mick Flame and hosted a 102-styled show often featuring former WXB 102 DJs as guests.

Except for NU 107, which continued to tweak its format and became an alternative rock powerhouse in the '90s, none of it lasted as Manila entered another decade. In the late 1990s, tribute sites to WXB 102 started appearing on the Internet from fans. Moreover, various radio shows began debuting in the Philippines that paid homage to the quirky and colorful music of the former FM station and its successors brought to an entire generation of teenagers in the country.

On 10 September 2005, lifelong fan and New Wave historian Michael Sutton, CEO of the independent label Sutton Records, along with Seattle-based DJ Brent Sanders and Los Angeles-based DJ Klyde, revived WXB 102 in cyberspace. Sutton proceeded to recruit some of XB's original staff, including Mick Flame, The Morning Man, and Cool Carla, to record their first XB shows in 18 years.

Listeners can now hear WXB 102 through webstreaming powered by Live365. According to the latest internet radio survey, WXB 102 is currently #2 in the ratings for New Wave internet radio stations. In 2006, WXB 102 started playing the most recent songs from new wave legends, current indie and alternative acts such as Bloc Party, Franz Ferdinand, Kaiser Chiefs and The Killers, as well as reggae and ska.

On October 23, 2006, WXB 102 became the first online music station to have a countdown (see the TOP 102 list below) hosted by DJs in various countries. On January 15, 2007, WXB 102 began broadcasting live for the first time since going off the air nearly 20 years before. WXB 102's legendary Program Director/DJ George Frederick returned to the airwaves along with The Ghost, Mick Flame, and Naughty Natty, one of the station's original volunteers. Two days later, Julius Caesar came back to the station, also broadcasting live from Manila. WXB 102 is the only Internet-based New Wave radio station with live DJs broadcasting daily.

* WXB 102 was the first FM station simulcast on the AM band in the Philippines.
* The first 102 party was called "SHADOW CABINET of WXB 102."
* When George Frederick took over PD duties in 1986, he threw away the pop records from Madonna, Rod Stewart, and Michael Jackson, among others, that the station was still playing.
* "Enveloped Ideas" by the Filipino New Wave group The Dawn was voted as the greatest 102 song of all time by listeners in 2006.
* DJ Ben Hitler died from a heart attack in 2005.
* Although known as a New Wave radio station, WXB 102 wasn't afraid to bend the format by surprising fans with the non-punk likes of Richie Valens ("La Bamba"), Nancy Sinatra ("These Boots Are Made for Walkin'"), and Frank Sinatra ("My Way"). * The OPM pop song "Pain" by Martin Nievera was once played on WXB 102 to fulfill KBP regulations for playing local Philippine music. When George Frederick celebrated his birthday on the air in 2006, owner Michael Sutton dedicated the song to him.

Jonathan Tiongco A.K.A. DJ Jamtrx has been professionally re-mixing since 1991. Was one of the Top Re-mixers for DISCOTECH USA before it closed following the death of partner and company owner; Lenny Gray back 1996. Also did ULTIMIX Bootleg re-mix of "Let's Wait Awhile" - Janet Jackson. Credits include re-mixes of songs like "Sidewalk Talk'96" by Madonna, "Padlock'96" by M People, "Down Under" by Men at Work and the Intl. New Wave Diary Megamixxes. He is now running his own Music Production firm, DSP-ENT-SYS. A true survivor, DJ Jamtrx can write, compose, arrange and produce tracks all in his Studio and is a Digidesign & Sound Forge Pioneer for 10 years. He is also responsible for the Big Asian Hits "Tiny Bubbles 2000" & "Terminal" by Rupert Holmes. In August 2005, Jonathan was commissioned by the Philippine Government to analyze the infamous "Hello Garci" wiretapps, which almost impeached Philippine President Gloria Arroyo. After a decades experience in Digital Audio Production, he concluded the tapes tampered.
